Inland Fisheries Eire is presently investigating the salmon mortalities which have occurred on the Ballysadare River in Co. Sligo and conducting a full environmental evaluation to find out the trigger or causes of this extreme fish kill.

Because of this, each industrial and leisure fishing is prohibited on the Ballysadare system. Friday, July 19th, 2024:  Inland Fisheries Eire(IFI) and the Division of the Surroundings, Local weather and Communications have suspended all fishing on the Ballysadare System in Co. Sligo as a result of considerations about greater than 900 unexplained salmon mortalities discovered within the Ballisodare River.

Minister Eamon Ryan, Minister for the Surroundings, Local weather and Communications with accountability for Inland Fisheries, launched the ‘Conservation of Salmon and Sea Trout Ballysadare (Closed Rivers), Bye-law No. C.S. 336, 2024’ into operation on Wednesday, July seventeenth, 2024.

IFI is presently investigating the salmon mortalities and conducting a full environmental evaluation of the catchment.

IFI awaits postmortem evaluation of various salmon in an effort to decide the trigger or causes of the deaths.

Each industrial and leisure fishing is prohibited on all waterways within the Ballysadare System, which begins east of Derkmore Level on Sligo Bay and contains Ballisodare River, Templehouse Lough, Ballygawley Lough, and Arrow Lough, as per this map of the system.

The bye-law applies to all fish, shellfish, crabs and crustaceans on the Ballysadare System.

Commenting on IFI’s investigation, Dr Cathal Gallagher, Deputy Chief Government of IFI, mentioned: “IFI is constant to seek out unexplained wild Atlantic salmon mortalities within the Ballysadare system, with 900 fish fatalities now recorded.

“These ongoing fish fatalities are extremely regarding.

“IFI is awaiting the outcomes of a catchment environmental evaluation together with a postmortem evaluation of affected salmon, in searching for to know the reason for these deaths.
